A blog by Robin Evans. I want to be in pictures. School started and I met some wonderfully talented writers and tried my hand at screenwriting for the first time. The course was called “bootcamp” and not for nothing — from idea to first draft script in a week. It was an eye opener. I came out of it with a whole new respect for structure in story. I’ll definitely apply what I’ve learned to other forms of writing I do. In the meantime…. Should I shut it down? July 15, 2012. So, it shouldn’t be a surp...

A blog by Robin Evans. The shearling coat in question, post-Darwin. Why do we dress up animals like children? About | Writerly Type
https://writerlytype.wordpress.com/about
A blog by Robin Evans. I’m a writerly-type currently living in Vancouver, BC. I’m big on crossword puzzles (New York Times first, LA Times close second) and walking the dog. I run too. If you can call it that. This blog is a mess of whatever strikes me whenever I have time. Snippets of writing, ideas, and things that amuse me or make me think. Much love to the readers of this blog. You know who you are. And I do too. Well, most of you anyway. You can sometimes find me on twitter too: @writerlytype. You a...

Sophie Playle: For the Love of Dystopia
http://sophieplayleblog.blogspot.com/2011/01/for-love-of-dystopia.html
Friday, 7 January 2011. For the Love of Dystopia. It recently occurred to me that I absolutely love dystopian film and fiction. I seem to be constantly drawn to writing dystopian fiction, and writing about it in my critical essays. So what is it that appeals to me? For example: The Matrix. What if machines took over the world and used humans as their power source? What if the government constantly watched and monitored all human activity? For definitions and examples of each. I love the broadness of dyst...

We hear terrible stories all the time about awful harpies who keep their kids from their fathers because they’re angry about this or that, and the kids pay the price for the dissolution of the marriage. The kids are getting the short end of the stick so these women can punish their exes for cheating or whatever. Who’s to say? The acorn and t...

With just two short stories published in 2010 I was. Surprised today to learn I got an Honorable Mention. For 2010 in Ellen Datlow's Best Horror of the Year. The story was Lost Lying on Your Back. And it was first published in GUD Magazine #5 last February. Thank you to Ellen and to the team at GUD, especially Kaolin Fire, the editor of that particular issue. It makes we want to get back to writing short stories instead of editing this novel, but I have to stay on the path.for now. Steven J. Dines. Darke...

Writerly Smiterly
Monday, February 17, 2014. I assume after I have a dozen or so posts under my belt the direction of this blog will be a little more clear. I'd like to include some agent interviews, writer resources, query critiques and tales from the querying trenches eventually, but since I have to start somewhere I figured I'd start with one of my own querying struggles; how many is too many? For me, this is always a struggle. My first reaction is to send to all my top agent picks, because they're my top picks. Bu...

Dean Wesley Smith and his wife, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, are setting up and editing an anthology project called Fiction River. You can find out all about it here. So why are they using Kickstarter to get funding? Because they know what it takes to get some seed or start up money. They started up Pulphouse 20 years ago or so and had to close it because the money wasn't there anymore. Despite great stories and covers and all.they couldn't make a go of it after a while. A real shame. Posted by Nancy Beck.
Faeries With Chalkboards | The stuff of a writer's weirdo brain
The stuff of a writer's weirdo brain. October 22, 2012. About playing Novelist: I have a very conflicted (and recently surfaced) identity as an author of Young Adult fiction. Even as I’ve decided that I want most to write stories for 13 to 17 year-olds, the decision is fraught with a simply stupid amount of self-doubt. Also, there’s the sad fact that much of it is to literature what the Huffington Post is to journalism. Sure teenagers need literary characters whose experiences are real and salient to the...

Monday, April 15, 2013. What are vague pronouns and why to I need to avoid them? When composing a piece of writing intended for an audience - even if that audience is only your teacher - one of the most difficult skills to master is the ability to write clearly for someone who cannot read your thoughts. As a reader, I am often confused by what budding authors are trying to communicate. One important skill that I learned from my (surprise! Beware of the lonely this. What is an author's style?
