Journalism. Education. Communication. End of the world. History of the world. The Last 21 Days of Human History Begin Today. December 1, 2012. You’ve probably heard by now according to the Mayan calendar, the world ends on December 21, 2012. How could that be wrong? The Mayan’s got everything else right didn’t they. Today’s topic: The Birth of Humanity! 8230;Pitman, NJ. Within a few years the world was completely populated and extraordinarily inbred. Seeing how that didn’t work, God decided to wipe t...

Journalism. Education. Communication. Lost Confidence, Lost Hope. May 21, 2012. This is the sort of story that sends waves of discomfort through the international adoption community. When the San Antonio-based Adoption Services Associates, Inc., filed for chapter 11 and closed it’s doors on April 9, it also seemingly closed the door on the adoption prospects of many prospective parents from all over the United States and in other countries. A news story like this puts another smudge on surface of interna...

Stop Bullying at the Source: The Bully | The Writerly Way

https://writerlyway.wordpress.com/2011/08/05/stop-bullying-at-the-source-the-bully

Journalism. Education. Communication. Stop Bullying at the Source: The Bully. August 5, 2011. The talk about bullying tends to center on the victims: how to recognize them, how to help them. We’ve got to help the victims, of course. But to stop bullying completely, we need to understand what makes bullies and then figure out how fix them and how to stop making more of them. Here’s a list of what bullies have in common:. They are victims of bullying and other forms of abuse themselves. The fix for a bully...

Journalism. Education. Communication. Shine a Light on Bullying. August 4, 2011. Which of these statements sounds like something a bully would say? A) Hey, nerd, get over here! B) You’re such a fag. C) Say that again and I’m going to knock your teeth down your throat. D) Wait till we get off the bus. A child comes home from school, normal, happy, content, tosses a book bag casually onto the living room couch, gives mom a hug, grabs a snack from the frig and heads upstairs to the Playstation and the flat ...

Feel The Words | A Thinking Kind of Reading

https://thinkingkindofreading.wordpress.com/2015/04/06/feel-the-words

A Thinking Kind of Reading. A Day’s Wait. One of my favorite reading questions is, How do the words make you feel? It’s not a very Common Core-ish question, but it is an extremely valuable question. As a writer, I am always acutely aware of how my words could make my reader feel. Empathy with the reader is essential to developing a writing voice. However, we need to take it up a notch. To feel the words is to understand the words deeply. Too often, our students just read the words, without connecting...

A Thinking Kind of Reading. A Day’s Wait. Let’s all take a minute to thank Tim Shannahan. Over the last few weeks, a new fire kindled beneath the Great Silent Reading Controversy and flames erupted. On behalf of literacy bloggers everywhere, let me say, Thanks for lighting the match, Tim. Shannahan has argued over the last couple of decades that research doesn’t the independent reading practice known as sustained silent reading (SSR) or drop everything and read (DEAR). Now, on to argument. Sometimes I fe...

Had some interesting things to say this weak on paralyzing obsession one right answer in American schools. In doing so, he hit on one of my favorite hot button topics. Okay, give us your best wrong answers.

https://thinkingkindofreading.wordpress.com/a-days-wait

A Thinking Kind of Reading. A Day’s Wait. A Day’s Wait. He came into the room to shut the windows while we were still in bed and I saw he looked ill. He was shivering, his face was white, and he walked slowly as though it ached to move. What’s the matter, Shatz? I’ve got a headache. You better to back to bed. You go to bed. I’ll see you when I’m dressed. You go up to bed, I said, you’re sick. I’m all right, he said. When the doctor came he took the boy’s temperature. One hundred and two. After a while he...

Remembering the Most Important Reader in Your Life: Your Mom | A Thinking Kind of Reading

https://thinkingkindofreading.wordpress.com/2015/05/10/remembering-the-most-important-reader-in-your-life-your-mom

A Thinking Kind of Reading. A Day’s Wait. Remembering the Most Important Reader in Your Life: Your Mom. Odds are pretty good your mom was the first reader in your life. She held you in her arms and read to you about bunnies when your were just a swaddled lump. She read you to sleep when you were a toddler itching to climb out of your crib. Your mom probably helped you with your homework. Memorizing spelling words and vocabulary lists. Identifying synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and homophones. She listened...

Writerly Stuff

Dean Wesley Smith and his wife, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, are setting up and editing an anthology project called Fiction River. You can find out all about it here. So why are they using Kickstarter to get funding? Because they know what it takes to get some seed or start up money. They started up Pulphouse 20 years ago or so and had to close it because the money wasn't there anymore. Despite great stories and covers and all.they couldn't make a go of it after a while. A real shame. Posted by Nancy Beck.

Faeries With Chalkboards | The stuff of a writer's weirdo brain

The stuff of a writer's weirdo brain. October 22, 2012. About playing Novelist: I have a very conflicted (and recently surfaced) identity as an author of Young Adult fiction. Even as I’ve decided that I want most to write stories for 13 to 17 year-olds, the decision is fraught with a simply stupid amount of self-doubt. Also, there’s the sad fact that much of it is to literature what the Huffington Post is to journalism. Sure teenagers need literary characters whose experiences are real and salient to the...

Writerly Type | A blog by Robin Evans

A blog by Robin Evans. The shearling coat in question, post-Darwin. Why do we dress up animals like children? Darwin, the little monkey that sparked a media frenzy last year can finally call Storybook home. According to the Globe and Mail. I call it day after day. It’s part of our agreement. Is it something about his size? The whole scenario is custom-made for tabloid television and the coverage continues to be delivered in an ironic, mocking way, as if the whole thing is a joke. And isn’t it? Yet, the p...

A Place To Be

A Place To Be. A place to sort of anonymously try out my talents and gifts as a writer. I had a wonderful 5th grade teacher who made me believe I could write. She told me "keep on writing". So here goes.read and respond to help me grow. Wednesday, July 8, 2015. I signed up this week for Teachers Write. I found it last minute as it was just beginning. I didn't have time to investigate or wrap my mind around it, but it began and I am jumping in. Somy exercise. Some character work:. I feel I can't tell thei...

Writerly Ways

Monday, April 15, 2013. What are vague pronouns and why to I need to avoid them? When composing a piece of writing intended for an audience - even if that audience is only your teacher - one of the most difficult skills to master is the ability to write clearly for someone who cannot read your thoughts. As a reader, I am often confused by what budding authors are trying to communicate. One important skill that I learned from my (surprise! Beware of the lonely this. What is an author's style? Writerly Writer Writing | …in which I share all the writing. And you will love it, dammit.

8230;in which I share all the writing. And you will love it, dammit. I’m a writer. I can totally make up words. I enjoy the occasional alliteration, as well. So… what ‘writerly’ stuff will I discuss herein? Probably stuff like… National Novel Writing Month. Aka, NaNoWriMo. Also, Camp NaNoWriMo, a couple of NYC Midnight writing challenges, and various other writing competitions, contests, and submissions. Probably some any other writing-related activities for funsies or for seriousies, as well. I *really*...
