Dave's adventures in Finland. Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Forecasters: Finland versus the US. As I learn more about forecasting and meteorological education in Finland, I am increasingly surprised at the differences between forecasters between the two countries. If you talk to meteorology undergraduates in the US, you will run into a significant fraction of them who are dying to get jobs in the US National Weather Service (NWS). That is their career goal: they just want to forecast for the NWS. Days are gett...

The productivity of Finnish labour is among the best in Europe. According to the International Labour Organisation, Finland has managed to significantly improve its productivity, bringing it closer to that of the United States. The high productivity figures in the USA are largely explained by long working days and short holidays. The change in the produc...

Dave in Suomi: February 2007
http://daveinsuomi.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html
Dave's adventures in Finland. Monday, February 26, 2007. This weekend's musuem was the Postal Museum of Finland. A museum of the history of mail delivery and stamps. For those who didn't know, I was an avid stamp collector as a child. The collection still resides in my childhood home, untouched for the last five or six years when I ran out of stamp hinges. Fortunately, the Postal Museum of Finland Gift Shop had the solution to my dilemma! So, I will regain the fun of my youth next time I'm home. In all, ...

Dave's adventures in Finland. Thursday, April 26, 2007. European Geosciences Union meeting in Vienna. I did attend some really well-presented and interesting sessions, especially the Dynamical Meteorology session organized by Conny Schwierz and the session on communicating natural hazards. I was even surprised by a nice session on gravity waves late on Friday afternoon. The conference ended late on Friday, afterwhich I changed hotels and started my vacation. Posted by David Schultz @ 5:17 PM. Finland is ...

Dave's adventures in Finland. Sunday, June 24, 2007. More on last winter, if you can call it that. Last autumn-winter season was Europe's warmest for more than 700 years, researchers say. The last time Europeans saw similar temperatures to the autumn and winter of 2006-07, they were eating strawberries at Christmas in 1289, according to Jürg Luterbacher at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and colleagues.". After today, there will be no more analog television broadcasting in Finland. The government expects that 10% of people haven't upgraded their TVs with digiboxes to enable them to receive digital broadcasts. You can read more about how the decision was made on the Helsinki Sanomat web page. In the U.S., the date for conversion is set to February 17, 2009. This week I am at th...

Dave's adventures in Finland. Thursday, November 30, 2006. This past weekend I had the pleasure of going on the Frostbite Paddle to. Island, about 70 km west of Helsinki, in the Gulf of Finland. The trip was organized by the Sipoon Kanoottiklubi (Sipoo Canoe Club) (SKK). Click on the British flag for English translations for some pages.) On Saturday morning, we picked out our sea kayaks at the clubhouse, and then began the drive westward. Thanks for a great trip, Clas and SKK! Thursday, November 23, 2006.

Dave in Suomi: January 2007
http://daveinsuomi.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html
Dave's adventures in Finland. Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Originally, I had started this blog to communicate to friends and family back home in the USA. I purposefully did not tell anyone in Finland about the site so that I could blog more freely. Slowly, more Finns have found my page, including my friends and coworkers. My thoughts are no longer as private as I wanted them to be. So, I cannot live this secret life anymore. Welcome Finns! Posted by David Schultz @ 3:56 PM. Should be "farther"] to north.
