Dianne Sutherland: March 2014
http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Friday, 7 March 2014. Snake's Head Fritillary.an old favourite. I know I've blogged about painting Fritillaria meleagris. Before but I do like it! And so do lots of other artists, most notable of course are Rory McEwen's paintings. Which probably can't be bettered, but also Elizabeth Blackadder, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. And many more have painted Fritillaries. But today I painted this larger study ( x2). Study of flower head x2 in size ( 22 x 26 cm). There's something unique about the colour and patter...

Saturday, 11 July 2015. Everythings Coming up Roses! A few weeks ago I visited the David Austin Garden,. Which is less than an hours drive from my home. In the past I haven't been a huge fan of roses and only ever illustrated a few in all the years I've been painting. but decided it was time to give the roses another chance. The garden is probably one of the best I've ever seen and got me completely hooked on roses. I purchased three plants and the painting commenced! I couldn't write a post without a fe...

Dianne Sutherland: The Sketchbook, Graveyard Studies, Day 21-30
http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-sketchbook-graveyard-studies-day-21.html
Saturday, 30 May 2015. The Sketchbook, Graveyard Studies, Day 21-30. Here is a selection of the final sketchbook drawings for the 30 day challenge, undertaken on days 21-30. Drawn as preparatory work for my big 'doodle' style drawing and also as reference for a new painting on vellum. All are local wildflowers, I've completed 12 sketches to date using the graveyard next door for inspiration. Day 21, Vetch, Vicia sepiens. Completely surrounds the grave of a woman named Kezia Beech, who died in 1877. I lik...

Dianne Sutherland: Drawing and Seeing
http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2015/05/drawing-and-seeing.html
Monday, 25 May 2015. The question is not what you are looking at - but how you look and whether you see. I've been thinking about useful blog posts for those starting out in botanical and natural history art. I've even revisited some old posts and added new material and yet again have come back to the importance of drawing and seeing. I have covered drawing in previous posts but feel it has to be the place to start. why? How can we interpret with pencil or paint. Drawing is pretty important if you want t...

Dianne Sutherland: January 2015
http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 27 January 2015. Back to Vellum and the Blog's Birthday. Last week marked 7 years of blogging for me! It's been interesting to look back and see what's happened in that time. The first image I ever posted on the blog was my very first painting on vellum, so it seems fitting to write a post about my latest work on the surface. My most recent work on vellum, Three British Butterflies on manuscript vellum 2015 ( Comma, Red Admiral and Peacock abberation, painted life size). The process of building ...

Dianne Sutherland: February 2015
http://diannesutherland.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, 28 February 2015. A Bit of Sparkle! Had a busy week dropping off paintings at Westminster for the SBA annual and also picking up from the Brompton hospital exhibition. I also managed a quick visit to the Manchester Museum to see the newly refurbished natural history section and even managed a quick look at the amazing and beautiful gun powder drawing installation 'Unmanned Nature' by Cai Guo-Qiang. The whole time I've been thinking about the butterflies! Not sure whether it's a good idea or not.
