Narrow Boat Chalice: Last of the non-tidal Thames - Getting to Teddington
http://chalicecruises.blogspot.com/2011/04/last-of-non-tidal-thames-getting-to.html
Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Saturday, 23 April 2011. Last of the non-tidal Thames - Getting to Teddington. We had only a few miles and locks to go today, to get ourselves to Teddington, so we didn't rush it at all. Alan and I took Charlie for a walk past the moored houseboats at Chertsey, and on a bit further, until we met a road. Charlie was keen to try out his new found swimming skills, walking into the Thames in several places, and doggie paddling about. Truly a "House Boat"! Safe ho...
Narrow Boat Chalice: December 2009
http://chalicecruises.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Thursday, 31 December 2009. Baron Nights, Goodnight Vienna, or Kestrel Manoeuvres in the Dark? As Alan is now writing some of the posts we will identify the poster from now on - this one posted by Cath). Thursday 31st December 2009. We flung everything on board, and, pausing only to get the fire alight, we set off north. It was light until about 4:30 - but some time later, as we were sitting and drinking coffee we heard a boat coming up through the lock - in ...
Narrow Boat Chalice: Thames is magnificent, but very busy today
http://chalicecruises.blogspot.com/2011/04/posted-by-alancath-last-night-we.html
Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Friday, 22 April 2011. Thames is magnificent, but very busy today. Last night we finally got down to thinking about our options for the rest of the journey. Although we were sure we had probably caught up enough of the time lost over Alan's eye problems, there remained the thorny question about one particular stretch of the Thames which although only just over 5 miles long always places heavy constraints on the journey into London. Of course this stretch of t...
Narrow Boat Chalice: May 2010
http://chalicecruises.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Monday, 31 May 2010. Rickmansworth to Kensal Green. Posted by Cath, using Alan's account). A grey and overcast day after yesterday. The alarm went off as usual at 7 am, and again, I had difficulty in surfacing from sleep. I've had a difficult couple of terms at work, and I'm falling asleep all over the place. Alan got up and took Charlie up the towpath for his first walk of the day, while I levered myself from bed and got dressed. Alan had wound the paddles a...
Narrow Boat Chalice: July 2010

Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Saturday, 31 July 2010. A Quiet Day With Cath's Father and His Wife. Brentford to Widewater near (Harefield). On two successive trips on the tidal Thames we have tried to take Cath's father and his wife for a trip, but each time he has been busy, (or so he claimed, anyway! They couldn't get to us particularly early, but we should have time, including a lunch stop,. Jim and Dot at Hanwell. Shame there is nowhere else for the bikes! They have always had a kind ...

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO: May 2015
http://sickleandflamingo.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO. Thursday, 28 May 2015. A Trip to Stoke Bruerne. Boat Flamingo - posted by Cath). We've been working on Flamingo on and off for weeks now, since we sold Chalice (except for various medical appointments and our trip to Rickmansworth with Sickle). We are making progress, but there is a lot to do, so any improvements seem small compared to the whole of what will eventually be needed. Stoke Bruerne, near the tunnel to avoid a long trip in reverse! We spent a fairly relaxed mo...
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: Back to two boats in single locks - and the duvet from hell.
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014/09/back-to-two-boats-in-single-locks-and.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Saturday, 6 September 2014. Back to two boats in single locks - and the duvet from hell. Boat Sickle and Chalice - posted by Alan / Cath). Very retrospective post for Tuesday 26th August. Waiting at Atherstone after we had caught up slower boats. We were well positioned to start off up Atherstone locks in the morning, but, as we were just getting going, a number of other boats wishing to do the same turned up. Hartshill depot - full of character but sadly neglected looking.
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: Another Chapter In Our Boating Story
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014/12/another-chapter-in-our-boating-story.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Monday, 22 December 2014. Another Chapter In Our Boating Story. Well it has finally happened , after lots of false starts, and one persistently less than serious "seller". We can now announce that our "new" (old) boat is "Large Northwich" "Flamingo", originally built for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company as their "Letchworth" by the same builder as "Sickle", (W J Yarwood and Sons), and in the same year, (1936). It can be found here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: April 2014
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Saturday, 26 April 2014. Odin comes home from hospital. The short story is that Odin has been very ill with sepsis caused by peritonitis. He required three abdominal operations in 12 days. For the last two weeks he has been at the Queen Mother Animal Hospital which is attached to the Royal Veterinary College at North Mimms. He came home on Saturday 26th April. The long story is below. and it is a long story. He wasn’t, he had to be carried downstairs. So, we too...In the ...
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: THAT Tunnel, an Interesting Mill and a New but Shallow Canal.
http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2011/08/that-tunnel-interesting-mill-and-new.html
Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Monday, 15 August 2011. THAT Tunnel, an Interesting Mill and a New but Shallow Canal. Boat Chalice - posted by Alan). You virtually pass below the railway waiting shelter. It would have been great if the Churnet Valley railway had been running today, as it parallels the canal for quite a while, but it was a "no trains" day on the timetable - well at least we got to sample it yesterday! We fail the tunnel heigh test fairly convincingly! That's me at the back! So we decided...

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO. Monday, 6 July 2015. Braunston 2015 - One of the best events we have attended. Boats Sickle and Flamingo - posted by Cath). To own one based on brass gas mask case links, (either original, or even replica). I found a nice piece of lace that I didn't yet know what I was going to do with, but I knew that I could find some use for it. During an enforced stall in parading, the coffees arrive just in time. Knitting just under way. We headed off to get burgers and a drink as i...

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO: April 2015
http://sickleandflamingo.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO. Wednesday, 29 April 2015. What Type Of Boat Is "Flamingo"? Some years back, when we first acquired "Sickle", I did a post entitled "What kind of boat is Sickle? Intended to explain her origins. That post has remained popular, and still gets quite a few hits, so, although "Flamingo" is a rather more conventional boat, it seems to me that some may be similarly interested in the history of a boat from the same builder, but not of the same type. Whereas "Chertsey" is a "Town...

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO: Picking up the pieces
http://sickleandflamingo.blogspot.com/2015/07/picking-up-pieces.html
Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO. Friday, 31 July 2015. Picking up the pieces. This post was originally drafted some time ago, but for various reasons did not get published. It has been updated at the end of July 2015. The first month or so on Flamingo was assessment, a lot of cleaning, trying to find places to put things and our furniture, and I managed to get some primer/undercoat on the inside of the side door, and the back doors to the main cabin. Expensive but just not appropriate to the history.

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO. Saturday, 31 May 2014. A very busy day on the Stoke Bruerne Flight. Boat Chalice - posted by Cath). A very sluggish start this morning. We went for a wander through the woodland with Odin, then had a leisurely breakfast. By the time that we finally got going, there had been several boats moving through in both directions. The steerer got all of the Brownies, and their leaders, off the boat, then began to explain how the lock worked, including all the important safety fea...

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO: March 2015
http://sickleandflamingo.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO. Monday, 30 March 2015. Buy A Boat and Get a Free "Lucky Dip" of tools. Well it has to be faced up to! I have reluctantly started to find out what lurks in the several inches of grease and oil ridden water that were residing below "Flamingo's" engine. However some rather more useful stuff has also started to surface, so here is a selection of what I have pulled from just two very small sections of the engine room bilge that I can actually reach in to. Friday, 27 March 2015.

Narrow Boat Chalice
Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Tuesday, 17 May 2011. A New Chapter Begins! Well, we have just become a two boat family, having just bought the former Working Boat, then Ice-Breaker, then Tug, named SICKLE. Current plans are to keep both boats, so it seems appropriate to start a new blog that will cover our adventures with both SICKLE and CHALICE. It is not impossible both boats will be out and about together on occasions. The new SICKLE and CHALICE blog can be found at. Links to this post.
