November 27, 2016. Yesterday I drove Adam and I down to Glos for a night flight. My second ever flight was a night flight from Glos and I was looking forward to seeing some lights from the air. We had hoped to fly to Kemble but they aren’t open for evenings on Saturday nights. So it was to be plan B, a little local looking around at a few towns from the air. So we headed back in feeling a bit deflated. No night flying for us, that’s the rules, right? A bit of a nonstandard event. October 24, 2016. I know...

Ways in which flying is making me a strange person | elizabethinthesky

https://elizabethinthesky.wordpress.com/2016/03/07/waysflyingmakesmestrange

Ways in which flying is making me a strange person. March 7, 2016. April 11, 2016. I am silently disappointed in customer service people on the phone when they make up a fake phonetic alphabet. My postcode does not begin “Cat Victor”. Likewise, when it’s my turn I have to force myself to talk at a normal speed when spelling out words phonetically because I’ll look like a pretentious idiot if I rattle it off. My bins blow over when empty and the wind is over 25 knots. When my car struggled to start recent...

A bit of a nonstandard event | elizabethinthesky

https://elizabethinthesky.wordpress.com/2016/10/24/a-bit-of-a-nonstandard-event

A bit of a nonstandard event. October 24, 2016. October 24, 2016. I know, it’s been long gap with no flying. I’ve had one lesson at Gloucester, which I have partially written up, and a variety of little trips with friends which I’d decided not to write up unless they are a bit different to the others. Today’s definitely qualified. I didn’t know that existed! We got out the circuit and up to some free space out a bit to redo the emergency checks, this time to the emergency lever, which worked. The ver...

Lesson #18: Not so solo Circuits | elizabethinthesky

https://elizabethinthesky.wordpress.com/2016/02/14/lesson-18-not-so-solo-circuits

Lesson #18: Not so solo Circuits. February 14, 2016. February 14, 2016. Solo here I come. There were beautiful clear skies when I arrived, clear both in terms of no clouds and minimal traffic in the air! I signed away my life on some paperwork to go solo and we headed out to do a couple of circuits first. Circuit #2: Spot on. Bit more right rudder wouldn’t go amiss on landing. Surface wind 030/20. Oh dear, far above solo limits. 😦. Circuit #4: Fine. Surface wind 030/15. I’m pleased I can handle my...

Lesson 19: Back in the Game | elizabethinthesky

Lesson 19: Back in the Game. April 3, 2016. April 3, 2016. I’ve been off flying for about 2.5 months because of illness. Now I’m back! It felt quite unnatural to be crammed in a rickety little C152 after the last few flights in the Arrow but I felt back in the routine of it by the time I’d taxiied to the hold point. The visibility and cloud base were crummy so there was no chance of going solo today; I was just hoping to not have forgotten everything! Ways in which flying is making me a strange person.

Landing voucher, IMC and a Zone Transit | Andy's Blog

Writings of a UK based Private Pilot. Laquo; Arrow currency check and a new airfield in the logbook. Multi-leg tour, and a tech aircraft. Landing voucher, IMC and a Zone Transit. One of the landing vouchers in this month’s flying magazines was for Haverfordwest, a great airfield out on the West coast of Wales. I’d been there a. Previously, it’s always a good place to have a usual ‘airfield’ lunch and the scenery is worth seeing too! In IMC, but with signs of the ground below. Emerging from the cloud layer.

Semester in Uganda

When your journey takes you across the Atlantic. Tuesday, April 21, 2009. Weleba uganda. Good-bye uganda. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Of warthogs and elephants and Easter bunnies. The weekend before, after a crazy long drive down to the park in southwestern Uganda, we got to see not only warthogs but elephants, hippos, water buffalo, cobs (antelope-like animals), a lion, and even a leopard on our safari. The leopard was sweet, the elephants (especially the baby ones! Thursday, April 2, 2009. So with our g...
