HIGH COUNTRY GARDENER

Friday, June 19, 2015. The Rev. Dana Prom Smith, S.T.D., Ph.D. (6/13/2015). Springtime is weed time. First, the dandelions appear here and there with their bright, cheerfully yellow flowers. Some gardeners welcome them, finding them medicinally and culinarily useful. Others despise them, digging them out, root, flower, and petal, no easy task with tap roots burrowing deep in the soil. While attitudes about dandelions are ambivalent and even ambiguous, for some weeds there is unanimous disdain. Pull them ...

HIGH COUNTRY GARDENER: THE ANSWER MAN: Deporting FIsh Tacos

http://highcountrygardener.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-anser-man-deporting-fish-tacos.html

Saturday, April 18, 2015. THE ANSWER MAN: Deporting FIsh Tacos. The Rev. Dana Prom Smith, S.T.D., Ph.D. (4/18/2015). Dear Answer Man, it’s Abigail here once again. It’s about my husband Rusty. He claims he’s “a meat and potatoes kinda guy,” which means, I think, that he doesn’t like vegetables. He’s got the idea that because he lives in. He’s a frontiersman, some kind of pioneer. He doesn’t even wear a cowboy hat, instead, it’s a ball cap turned backwards. Howdy, Abigail, does he like sardines? It took i...

HIGH COUNTRY GARDENER: July 2014

http://highcountrygardener.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 23, 2014. APHIDS, WHITE FLIES, THE LEGISLATURE AND THE GOVERNOR. The Rev. Dana Prom Smith, S.T.D., Ph.D. (7/21/2014). After spying aphids on my red elderberry, I took my nozzled hose to blast them with a merciless torrent of water. As I was making sure to aim at the underside of the leaves, our Legislature and Governor came to mind. The aphids had attacked the tender new leaves, not from the top of the leaves where they can easily be seen, but on the underside, hidden from the eye. Findin...

At about 12,500 feet in the. Her ancestors were Tibetans who had crossed the mountains and settled in. They had no written language. When she came to. She couldn’t read or write. HIGH COUNTRY GARDENER: May 2015

http://highcountrygardener.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 27, 2015. The Rev. Dana Prom Smith, S.T.D., Ph.D. (5/30/2015). I’m really pissed off about the stuff that falls on my garden, leaves in the fall, pine needles in the spring. Just after I rake up the pine needles, weeds begin popping up. They piss me off. It’s not just one weed, it’s a whole gang of weeds that pop up one after another, starting in the spring right through to fall. I can predict the buggers. And then there’s that yellow gunk? Stuffs up my head. The needles and leaves are nat...

High Country Gardening – Zone 5 at 7100 feet!

Not so easy in my Rocky Mountain paradise. I have had to learn much more about growing my favorite vegetables, I had to plant. Trees and I have added flowers to my passion. What is different in Colorado – everything! The soils here have very little decayed matter in them. Very little grows naturally in our semi-arid state so there is not enough plant matter to create a rich top soil. [singlepic id=29 w=320 h=240 float=center]. Irrigation is necessary to grow most plants. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
