postcards from north borneo: A tale of two bridges

http://postcardsfromnorthborneo.blogspot.com/2009/09/tale-of-two-bridges.html

Postcards from north borneo. My state; as how i see it. Sunday, September 13, 2009. A tale of two bridges. Tamparuli is like one of the many smaller towns around Sabah. It started as a small settlement where traders and indigenous farmers meet regularly at the tamu. To barter trade goods. A township evolved as shops and markets were built in the area. It is also the last town travellers heading up to the Kundasang highlands or to Kiulu, now known as one of the white water rafting sites in Sabah. Malaysia...

postcards from north borneo: Off to the market

http://postcardsfromnorthborneo.blogspot.com/2008/05/off-to-market.html

Postcards from north borneo. My state; as how i see it. Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Off to the market. The tamu or traditional market is a weekly institution in many Sabah districts. Despite the advent of supermarkets and the like, the tamu still gets a good following whether it is in Kota Belud, Donggongon, Pekan nablu, Sipitang or Tamparuli. I was at the Kota Belud recently and came home with these impressions. As proof that his wild honey has not been adulturated with sugar syrup, this farmer brought the ...

postcards from north borneo: May 2008

http://postcardsfromnorthborneo.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Postcards from north borneo. My state; as how i see it. Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Visiting my in-laws in the northern Kota Marudu district recently, I did a double-take after coming across six white sacks with a very familiar looking logo on them. It turned out that the sacks contained fertiliser distributed to farmers by federal government. (As in what appears to be still a precarious Barisan Nasional-led government.). Links to this post. Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Off to the market. For the musically incline...

postcards from north borneo: July 2007

http://postcardsfromnorthborneo.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Postcards from north borneo. My state; as how i see it. Wednesday, July 25, 2007. I shook my head in disbelief when I read this. The Malayan tigers at the Sabah zoo (technically it's called the Lok Kawi wildlife park) chewing on plastic bags? Those treating the tiger enclosures like a big refuse bin are obviously witless. Links to this post. Monday, July 23, 2007. But I keep this carving on my computer as a reminder to try and avoid 'monkeying' around. Links to this post. Bounty from the backyard. Though...

A Borneo voice: May 2008

http://aborneovoice.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Rants, raves, rumours and anything in between. A practicing scribe with too many things in his mind. Are they really jumping? Thursday, May 15, 2008. What is Anwar Ibrahim's game plan. I bounced this question to a friend who has this knack of seeing the bigger picture. Maybe it's because he used to be in a tresearch outfit. And he's also in Umno. This is his SMS response, in verbatim. So is it a smoking gun I see? Tuesday, May 13, 2008. Are they really jumping? Now that they are being more assertive.

All Things Borneo: Banded Bullfrog - Another Eater of Ants

http://allthingsborneo.blogspot.com/2008/12/banded-bullfrog-another-eater-of-ants.html

Saturday, 13 December 2008. Banded Bullfrog - Another Eater of Ants. Banded Bullfrog (Kaloula pulchra) is very similar to the Brown Bullfrog. K baleata) in both appearance and habits. ( See my previous post of 23 December 2007. It can be recognized from the latter by the wide yellow band on its sides and by its slightly bigger size. This species is said to be a recent introduction in. Ants, as my photos (taken in my brother's house on Labuan Island) show, are their almost exclusive food. Thank you, Ray.

All Things Borneo: May 2009

http://allthingsborneo.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 23 May 2009. Found another fantastic fly with long eye stalks! Although this guy looks very similar in appearance to members of the Diopsidae (Stalk-eyed Flies Family) it belongs to the family Tephritidae (commonly called Peacock Flies) a group of colourful fruit-flies that do not usually have stalk eyes, so I was told. These photos were taken at the same place where I photographed my first "eye-stalked fly" (see my earlier post Fantastic Fly. So maybe Mat Rempit* Fly or Hell's Angel Fly! Which...

Sunday, 23 December 2007. Chorus in the Rain. Click play button to watch and hear frog carol! May be the season for Christmas carols but here there's definitely no silent nights! When it rains cats and dogs these little frogs gather together to sing their surprisingly loud chorus of groans and hongs. When we were children we thought the sounds were made by monsters in the swamps, and adults warned us about playing in the rain! A champion singing male. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). All Things Borneo: Perfume in the Jungle

http://allthingsborneo.blogspot.com/2009/02/perfume-in-jungle.html

Sunday, 22 February 2009. Perfume in the Jungle. Is estimated that  over 3,000 species of orchids can be found in the wild in Borneo. However as the "wild places" of Borneo shrink many of these treasures, together with countless other plants and animals will inevitably become lost. One previously common fragrant orchid is the Necklace Orchid - Coelogyne rochussenii. Like the common Pigeon Orchid. 3 June 2010 at 05:00. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Saturday, 16 May 2009. Termite Mushrooms a Gift from Mother Earth. Types of wild fungi or mushrooms are collected for food in Borneo and when in season they may be found at wet markets and more usually in the open-air weekly tamu. In Sabah. One favourite and particularly tasty mushroom, Termitomyces clipeatus. Is called cendawan kaki pelanduk. In Malay, meaning "mousedeer hoof mushroom" refering to the shape of the un-opened mushrooms. Postcards from Nora Leigh | My adventures in Europe, spring 2011.

Postcards from Nora Leigh. My adventures in Europe, spring 2011. May 26, 2011. It’s so crazy to think that in eleven hours I will be hauling my suitcases onto the tube one last time, getting ready to catch a flight back to America . Easy and efficient modes of public transportation (I missed driving, but I love not being dependent on a car); the fashion, I’ve seen just about everything! It doesn't look like much. Two days after this run, on March 11, I massacred something in my hip (it was my glute medius tendon at my hip joint) after only 3 miles and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I was devastated! In other news, I made that ivory warp my bitch. The warp beam is so decorated with cones it ...

Postcards from Nowhere

2008 2012. Four years. Four years since I last put down thoughts on this wee space. It's been awhile since I last tried to write a blog entry. I don't know what stops me or what hinders me from making a go of it like I used to in these very pages. Age catching up. Jadedness? A misplaced sense of protecting one's privacy? In the facebook and tweeter age that sounds utterly anachronistic. Maybe, I need to go back to where it really started. Where I took roots, so to speak. Posted by miranila at 9:45 PM.

Postcards From Nowhere

May 21, 2015. Recently, I’ve been catching up on some of last year’s films that I wanted to see. Along the way, I decided to seek out Michael R. Roskam’s The Drop. Not only because it looked like an intriguing crime drama, but also because it contained the last role of the great James Gandolfini (God rest his soul). Aside from that, The Drop. Is definitely worth seeing if you’re into this sort of thing. It isn’t easy to come across a solid mob flick nowadays, but I think this is one of the good ones.
