Searching for Sicily

Friday, March 21, 2014. Lent is a great time of year to cook seafood. The clams we get from Walking Fish. Usually end up in linguini vongole, but dinner on Ash Wednesday needed something less routine. 2 cups arborrio rice. 1 red onion, diced. 15 cups Christopher Sauce. 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined. Fresh parley, roughly chopped. 1 In a very hot pan, sear both sides of the shrimp in olive oil. Remove before they are fully cooked. 4 When the arborrio rice is nearly finished, add the Christopher Sauce.

http://searchingforsicily.blogspot.com/2011/09/chef-challenge-recap.html

Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Though the forecast called for steady rain, the weather cooperated on Saturday morning and the third annual Durham Farmer’s Market Chef Challenge was a success. Searching for Sicily: August 2013

http://searchingforsicily.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 1, 2013. Padron peppers might be the simplest good time I've ever had. I first tried them in Josh DeCarolis' gnocci with okra caponata. The dish, laced with padrons and guanicale, was fantastic, but I hadn't thought of his preferred heat source until this summer at the market. Padrons are amazing," the vendor told me. Fry them in olive oil for about 5 minutes, then finish with a coarse salt and serve as a side. It's that simple, and they're fantastic.". Putting the kid to bed, picking at...

Searching for Sicily: The Sauce

http://searchingforsicily.blogspot.com/2011/01/sauce.html

Saturday, January 8, 2011. My family treats its traditional red sauce like others practice religion - we all believe in it, that it's sacred and essential for life, but each of us celebrates it by making it our own way. Assembled on the plate, it looked decent enough. The meal had cost only a couple of bucks, and there was enough leftover to cover the next day's lunch. But it didn't smell the same. I took my first bite and suddenly felt very alone, in a world far from home. Garlic and onions are essential.

Searching for Sicily: Feast 2012

http://searchingforsicily.blogspot.com/2013/01/feast-2012.html

Saturday, January 5, 2013. Each Christmas my family hosts a feast of the seven fishes. A Roman Catholic tradition, the meal is typically meatless and served Christmas Eve. It's bad luck to serve an even number of fish, so even if you can't pull off seven, three or five will keep you in God's favor. To learn more about the feast check out Maria Vultaggio's article here. About this holiday before the holiday. Smoked salmon and cream cheese bruschetta. Mussels in white whine and lemon sauce.

Searching For Shanti

Saturday, February 19, 2011. Its been a bit of time since I've updated my blog, life has been fairly mellow with not much to report on. We've gotten into a life routine here in Banaras so we're not doing anything extra special or especially amazing, even though what we are doing is pretty special and amazing! It took almost 2 hours to go 25 km! And many grabbed our hands and touched our feet. It was hugely moving, emotional, and so fantastic to see the kids. I noticed a large white tourist popluation her...

Searching for Sidewalks

Food, Philosophy, and Faith in Small Town America. Saturday, August 14, 2010. You May Not Remember Me, But. I think it's safe to say I've failed at blogging. It's been nearly two months since my last post. Nearly two months of telling myself I'd write a post during E's nap, or after he's in bed, or tomorrow. But somehow I never found the energy, and now here I am. Bad blogger. Of doing the work I'd set out to do on any given day, and as much fun as blogging is, that didn't make me feel good. It was the s...
