Searching for Sidewalks

Food, Philosophy, and Faith in Small Town America. Saturday, August 14, 2010. You May Not Remember Me, But. I think it's safe to say I've failed at blogging. It's been nearly two months since my last post. Nearly two months of telling myself I'd write a post during E's nap, or after he's in bed, or tomorrow. But somehow I never found the energy, and now here I am. Bad blogger. Of doing the work I'd set out to do on any given day, and as much fun as blogging is, that didn't make me feel good. Searching for Sidewalks: Three Things No One Told Me

http://searchingforsidewalks.blogspot.com/2010/05/three-things-no-one-told-me.html

Food, Philosophy, and Faith in Small Town America. Tuesday, May 25, 2010. Three Things No One Told Me. In honor of E turning three today, I am writing about three things no one ever told me about having a three year old. I've only "officially" had a three year old for about two hours, so I'm taking some liberties here, but I couldn't resist the symmetry of this exercise. I'm envisioning a post someday entitled "21 Things No One Told Me.". Drink white milk in groups smaller than five. I love this idea!

Searching for Sidewalks: The Salty and the Sweet

http://searchingforsidewalks.blogspot.com/2010/06/salty-and-sweet.html

Food, Philosophy, and Faith in Small Town America. Tuesday, June 1, 2010. The Salty and the Sweet. I went grocery shopping yesterday morning, and I made it a point to read the labels and check sodium content on all the packaged foods I purchase frequently. It was shocking, disappointing, and quite frankly, infuriating. Two slices of whole wheat bread - 13% of daily recommended amount of sodium. A tiny 6 ounce can of plain tomato sauce - 17% of the sodium RDA in just one quarter. June 1, 2010 at 11:21 AM.

Searching for Sidewalks: Try, Try Again

http://searchingforsidewalks.blogspot.com/2010/03/try-try-again.html

Food, Philosophy, and Faith in Small Town America. Monday, March 1, 2010. Try, Try Again. I've set lots of goals for myself over the years. Some I've achieved, some I haven't. For years now, one goal I've struggled towards has been making my own pie crust, and I am proud to say that I have officially achieved Pie Crust Success! Instead of not making it because I was choosing not to. With the gauntlet thrown once more, I gave it another go and was pleasantly surprised. A couple of notes from the trenches:...

The Project | Five to Nine

https://fivetonine.wordpress.com/the-project

In January 2006, on a holiday visit home, we discovered that this tiny house, just south of my hometown in small town, Arkansas and next door to my mother’s place, was for sale. Without any real fore or afterthought, we bought it and the 16 acres it sits on. Then we went back to grad school, one state away. In June, I moved back to Arkansas, too. We took out some walls, painted everything white, and tried to make the most of a glorified lean-to addition that became our temporary multipurpose room. August...

Baby, it’s cold outside. November 24, 2008. Yes, even in Arkansas, where the temperature sank to 18 Friday night. Floored. | Five to Nine

https://fivetonine.wordpress.com/2010/08/09/floored

August 9, 2010. Tags: a new old addition. Three years ago this summer, we moved into a little old house/a big new project. It had leaks, cracks, a pack rat and no air conditioning. We considered it a home improvement adventure. We were eager to begin our communion with sawdust. First, there were joists and subfloors to be replaced and repaired. But those floors – and that baby – turned out fine. And now we’re glad to have had the practice. Because three years later, that baby is old enough to say “...

Those home fires | Five to Nine

https://fivetonine.wordpress.com/2011/01/12/3393

January 12, 2011. Keeping the home fires burning. It’s cold. Really cold. Ice-blue skies and hazy peach clouds cold. Frozen fog. Thank goodness for wood stoves. This morning the thermometer on the porch hovered near zero. My New Jersey family, Canadian and Chicagoan friends can scoff, but single-digit temps = Arkansas frozen over. ( Though it could be worse. It feels good to keep the home fires burning. And even if my husband spends most of his time at home wearing a head lamp,. Things are coming along.

Kicking up the dust | Five to Nine

https://fivetonine.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/kicking-up-the-dust

Kicking up the dust. March 4, 2011. Tags: after the dust settles. There was really no beating the dust, which at least didn’t settle on the most popular furniture and playthings. Oh, but I loved stirred-up dust. When sunbeams from the highest windows in the house cut through the afternoon shadows downstairs, they were like spotlights on the dust hanging and swirling in the air. To see that now I would cringe, but then I sat and marveled at it, thinking about fairy dust and glitter. But the framing and ro...

July 13, 2009. The planning was hard: I could. I know I’ll be happiest when the house is done and we’re in, but I think we’ll miss its evolution. I know Jack will. At the end of the day, when the boys have left and everything is unplugged, he gets to work (Are the piles of boards climbable? Is the sawdust thick enough to write in? This is definitely the story of our summer. See what others’ look like at Tracey Clark’s. Where it’s Best Shot Monday. From → Snapshots. Larr; Outside In. Leave one →. You are ...

Searching For Shanti

Saturday, February 19, 2011. Its been a bit of time since I've updated my blog, life has been fairly mellow with not much to report on. We've gotten into a life routine here in Banaras so we're not doing anything extra special or especially amazing, even though what we are doing is pretty special and amazing! It took almost 2 hours to go 25 km! And many grabbed our hands and touched our feet. It was hugely moving, emotional, and so fantastic to see the kids. I noticed a large white tourist popluation her...

Friday, March 21, 2014. Lent is a great time of year to cook seafood. The clams we get from Walking Fish. Usually end up in linguini vongole, but dinner on Ash Wednesday needed something less routine. 2 cups arborrio rice. 1 red onion, diced. 15 cups Christopher Sauce. 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined. Fresh parley, roughly chopped. 1 In a very hot pan, sear both sides of the shrimp in olive oil. Remove before they are fully cooked. 4 When the arborrio rice is nearly finished, add the Christopher Sauce.
