Alaskan Adventures

Wednesday, January 16, 2013. While we certainly should. Have begun our study of American history with, at the very least, George Washington, our kids continue to be fascinated with the H.L. Hunley and the Civil War. So, since they know plenty about George Washington and the Revolutionary War thanks to Your Story Hour cds. We haven't even talked about the Hunley yet! I think we did spend one afternoon reading the following book (quite possibly the last book we had yet. The event that sparked a unit: the H...

Alaskan Adventures: January 2011

http://smithsinalaska.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 28, 2011. I recently borrowed one of the ready-made kits from IDEA to see what they were like; this time we chose Clifford. Along with the startling number of Clifford books we've amassed (who knew I'd bought so many Clifford books over the years? The IDEA Clifford kit and some amazing online resources we came up with a pretty fun Clifford unit for the week after we got back from Oregon. This is O Boy's house he made for Clifford. He refused to add more roofing. Must be a sun roof! The ob...

Alaskan Adventures: April 2011

http://smithsinalaska.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Yesterday morning we had the perfect combination of a very low tide and beautiful weather. So we headed out with a few friends to see what treasures we could discover. Saggy, baggy sea anemones. O Boy thought these were pretty funny! The Little Sweetie loved to look at things, but wasn't too excited about touching or holding much. O Boy was pretty interested in everything that Cole did and followed him around a lot. Here Cole is showing him an eel he'd just found. She may be gr...

Saturday, December 24, 2011. Fish hatchery field trip. There aren't a lot of places to go on field trips on our island, but the kindergartners do get to visit our local fish hatchery to learn about salmon life cycles each year. Here are some photos of their trip. Touching the salmon eggs. Here is their guide cutting open a salmon so they could see the eggs spilling out. Pretty exciting stuff for kindergartners! Touching and exploring everything. He even had a little colonial pony tail! Even though she wa...

Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Art class based on The Planets by Gustav Holst. This week we're going to listen to some of the Planets Suite by Gustav Holst and do some painting in response to it in our weekly homeschool class. I'll be posting pictures after the kids are done with their paintings. I'm using the following links in our learning time:. This is a link to various symphony orchestras playing the different pieces, with interesting commentary on the music. Friday, November 09, 2012. We started our...

Alaskan Adventures: July 2011

http://smithsinalaska.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 22, 2011. Several weeks ago a friend from church invited us out to the new lodge down the Narrows where he works. It is beautiful Majestic Eagle Lodge. It's my new favorite place to recommend to anyone traveling to Petersburg! The wonderful owner/chef and her able assistants treated us to a delicious meal and a fun tour of their well-built and well-organized cabins, lodge and property. Come for a visit! Here are the kids following James, our kind host, down to the boat on the beach. Fans sta...

Living the Adventure...: May 2010

Monday, May 31, 2010. Samantha's Sixth Birthday Party. This post is a bit belated, but I wanted to share some photos from Samantha's birthday party. But first, a short aside. If I were to ask you what type of "theme" most six-year-old girls would want for their birthday party, how would you answer? Probably you would say that most little girls would like to have a princess themed party, or perhaps a tea party, or maybe ballerinas? Here are some photos:. Here is the forest party set-up. We have a huge...

Living the Adventure...: Short Trip to Whistler

http://johnswilson.blogspot.com/2013/01/short-trip-to-whistler.html

Sunday, January 13, 2013. Short Trip to Whistler. Missi and I just enjoyed a few great days up in. Whistler with our friends Terry and Jessica. We became friends with Terry and Jess when they were living out in Seattle, but a job opportunity relocated them to Tulsa, Oklahoma about. A year or so after we became friends – way too soon if you ask us! Since they moved to. Whistler was awesome – it was very cold and there was tons of snow everywhere. And were very happy with the accommodations. See photo desc...

Living the Adventure...: An awesome guy's weekend in the Olympic Mountains

http://johnswilson.blogspot.com/2010/09/awesome-guys-weekend-in-olympic.html

Saturday, September 04, 2010. An awesome guy's weekend in the Olympic Mountains. And a weekend at the Oregon Coast playing poker, fishing, and racing down sand dunes. Without even the slightest hint of exaggeration, the "guy's weekend" is always one of the highlights of my year. This year we decided to try to go backpacking in Olympic National Park. This last photo was taken at about 10:30PM so the flash was blinding everyone. It was our last group shot together as Adam and I had to wake up at 1:30AM...

Sunday, November 28, 2010. A Breakfast Fave in the Wilson House. One of our favorite weekend breakfasts is Baked Oatmeal, or "brown oatmeal" as Sam likes to call it. As with many of our favorite things, we learned about this from the Zimels. And we still refer to the recipe card that A-R wrote out for us several years ago now. So you can also enjoy this awesome breakfast food, here is the recipe and a few pictures from this morning. Preheat oven to 350. 3 tsp baking powder. Links to this post. Or technol...

Monday, July 12, 2010. Great trip to San Diego. Missi and I took a great trip to San Diego a few weeks back to attend the wedding of my great friend Dave. Dave was my roommate at George Fox and he is truly one of my closest friends in the whole world. I was honored to stand beside him as he married Charity. Charity is an amazing woman and we are very excited for both of them. Links to this post. An awesome example of a publicly misspelled word. I know summer is here and school is out, but c'mon now.

Saturday, March 12, 2011. We have some good friends who live here in the Seattle area but are currently in Japan for work obligations. They live in Tokyo, which thankfully wasn't the hardest hit area, but they definitely felt the quake and were affected. Check out The Millerhood. If you want to read a well-written first-hand account of the earthquake. Links to this post. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. April 16, 2015. Our family just returned from two weeks in Ethiopia. The first week we took 11 RVA juniors to help with a session of camp at Langano. It was incredible! The students were totally engaged and completely poured themselves out. The missionaries and staff at Camp Langano were so encouraged by them – and we were so proud to bring such a great team to serve there. They really represented RVA well! Here is a link to an article.

The Smith's in China. Friday, September 10, 2010. As promised, here are some pictures that Mark and James took on their bike ride last Saturday. So this is actually a giant sculpture of a compass. Mark's favourite actually (and there are a lot of sculptures in Suzhou). He has always wanted to take a picture like this. I also wanted to post some pictures of Abigail's room since I didn't get a chance to last weekend. The butterfly stickers all over her room are from Ikea last weekend. Here's our spread, fr...
