The Root Connection

A quilt story I really want to tell. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Birthdays and upcoming classes in St. Loius and Seattle area. And all sorts of randomness. On Monday night I received a text from an old friend/neighbor which I have to share today. Unfortunately, I have not gone to many quilt shops and book stores to check if they are carrying my book so it is always nice to see when someone mentions seeing it at a shop. She was visiting a quilt shop in McMinneville, Oregon. And spotted my book! Last week ...

The Root Connection: This and That

http://therootconnection.blogspot.com/2015/08/this-and-that.html

A quilt story I really want to tell. Monday, August 3, 2015. I am working through my stash to pick out the fabrics for the Rail Fence QAL. Got a bit distracted! I had a draw just few lines. This morning I was looking for some old pictures and spotted this image of a very loved antique quilt. Check out the triangles. They were 3/4 inch small! I so admire the patience of quilt-makers of that generation! August 3, 2015 at 12:30 PM. Those 3/4 are amazing.but your drawing is even more amazing! 3/4 of an inch!

The Root Connection: Sunday Paper

http://therootconnection.blogspot.com/2012/02/sunday-paper.html

A quilt story I really want to tell. Sunday, February 19, 2012. Well a section of it! I have been working on this quilt for last three days. It took me a while to get used to the idea of foundation piecing. The pattern is quite simple yet amazingly interesting. The key to this pattern is to start out the center of the diamond with the shape that resembles the blade of the ceiling fan. I used Fons and Porter's 60 degree diamond ruler which I bought from local fabric shop for the template. Stay consistent ...

The Root Connection: Mug rugs

http://therootconnection.blogspot.com/2015/05/mug-rugs.html

A quilt story I really want to tell. Friday, May 22, 2015. They can pack so much punch! They can be framed, or hung on the wall. They can fill up a sad looking spot in the house with colors and texture. I made one on Tuesday for an exchange at Philadelphia Modern Quilt Guild. I would rather call them mini art quilts. Little bits and pieces of scraps-confetti found its way into a square. Three design elements - colors, textures and contrast - randomly chosen but mindfully put together. They are looking pr...

The Root Connection: To walk in their shoes

http://therootconnection.blogspot.com/2015/05/to-walk-in-their-shoes.html

A quilt story I really want to tell. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. To walk in their shoes. Is it even possible? Tear the clothes - not cut. Sew without a specific seam allowance. When needed use scissors instead of rotary cutter. Incorporate materials varying in thickness and fabric content. Stick to a limited number of clothes to mimic the 'make do' ways of quilting to achieve simple, bold and graphic quilts. I ended up with this top. I thought I had achieved my goal really well. I made a quilt top tha...My th...

Cultural Fusion Quilts: Choices for Rail Fence QAL - the wrong choice!

http://culturalfusionquilts.blogspot.com/2015/08/choices-for-rail-fence-qal-wrong-choice.html

A Melting Pot of Piecing Traditions. Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Choices for Rail Fence QAL - the wrong choice! Well I had worked out three possible scenarios for. Fabrics for the first Rail Fence and decided to use some. Of my Tropical fabrics which I felt would look good with. Co-ordinating solids - I don't normally use solids - and wished I hadn't! I should have taken more note of the comment. Linda at Koka Quilts. Anyway here are the first - and - last three blocks using the solids. Now these I like!

Lazy Gal Quilting: May 2012

http://lazygalquilting.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

The life of an UnRuly Quilter. Wednesday, May 30, 2012. Lily on the Mat with Diamonds. I'm trying to get back to normal, but I still miss my sweet Pokey so much. Writing in my blog makes me think of her, so it's hard to do. Lily worked on the quilt with me, of course. I'm using the EZ Rulers 60 degree diamond. Love it. (Thanks for letting me keep it, Kathy! The classic "holding down the blocks so they don't get away" technique:. I miss her so much. dammit dammit dammit. That's why working on the diamonds...

Basket full of Scraps. And working on an impulse. Saturday, March 10, 2012. The Victorian Hexagon Quilt. I feel pretty proud. Not only to have finished it but I will be starting to quilt it soon too. Yes, I am staying on track and not let that one go inside the closet. You can visit here. To read more about the quilt. So, I cut bits and pieces and used what I could and made a little quilt top. Yes, I can not emphasis enough on the word "little". What are your scraps being used for? Can't make a big quilt?

Basket full of Scraps...: Distractions

http://basketfullofscraps.blogspot.com/2014/07/distractions.html

Basket full of Scraps. And working on an impulse. Sunday, July 6, 2014. For many months I have been cleaning my closets.Yes, my cleaning/purging lasts for months since I don't really stick with it. Little distraction comes my way and I am off to something better than that closet. I found few old jeans and decided to cut them up. Not knowing what I would do with them, best thing was to tear them into strips. And this is what it led to. Here is how I made it. Tear the strips 2 to 3 inches wide. Here is the...

Basket full of Scraps...: July 2014

http://basketfullofscraps.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Basket full of Scraps. And working on an impulse. Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Organized a nine patch swap and shared this really fun way of making the blocks. Http:/ funwithbarbandmary.blogspot.com/p/9-patch-swap.html. I had never made nine patches with this method. If you are looking for making a scrappy nine patch quilt, this method is very effective. You need 2 - 4 1/2' x 4 1/2' squares of contrasting colors. Each pair of fabrics makes one set of nine patch blocks. Way too much fun! I sure hope so!

Peppermint Pinwheels - On The Design Wall: November 2014

http://onthedesignwall.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Amish: The Modern Muse. Awhile back, I mentioned. That I had submitted a couple of quilts to an upcoming show at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Well, they were both accepted! If you live in the Bay Area, I highly recommend you make it over to check out the museum. I've only had a tiny sneak peak at the quilts in the Modern Muse show, but I know they're going to be wonderful, not to mention the stunning antique quilts that will be on display!
