A nature blog of south-east Victoria, mostly Gippsland. Rockpool ramblings- Bear Gully. April 20, 2015. The beach is generally not suitable for swimming as it is mostly made up of extensive areas of rocks. This turned out to be a very interesting area to search in the tidal pools and our kids were constantly on their hand and knees peering into these worlds with amazement. Our youngest daughter at a rock pool. Pair of White-faced Herons hunting. I did notice them taking fish and small crabs but they were...

A nature blog of south-east Victoria, mostly Gippsland. Soaking up the brief winter sun. August 2, 2015. My family and I have recently returned from 6 weeks travelling to the Kimberley (that’s why I haven’t posted on here for a while) and it’s been hard for us to adjust to the cold and wet conditions from wearing shorts and t-shirts (if that) every day in the tropics. Gippsland: The Skink’s Domain | Wild South East
https://wildsoutheast.wordpress.com/2015/04/09/gippsland-the-skinks-domain
A nature blog of south-east Victoria, mostly Gippsland. Gippsland: The Skink’s Domain. April 9, 2015. I’ve been fascinated by reptiles since I was a child and whenever I get the chance I’m trying to ‘hunt’ them down to observe and photograph them in the field. In spring and summer any trip to the bush or in a well vegetated garden on a sunny day will yield a variety of skinks. A frenzy of activity is usually seen in spring and summer when many species emerge from their dormancy to mate. During th...Is al...

Bush Notes: July photos - what is this?
http://vicbushnotes.blogspot.com/2015/07/july-photos-what-is-this.html
A photo diary of the Victorian bush - specifically the area described as Herb-rich Foothill Forest. We are about 500 metres above sea level. I am not an expert, I'm an interested conservational owner. Friday, July 31, 2015. July photos - what is this? Would appreciate it if anyone can identify this. It's mouse-sized, but with a wider face and bigger ears. Sadly it drowned in a bucket that had been left outside and had some water in it after heavy rain. :-(. Apologies for the poor photo. All suggestions w...

https://johnwhitewildlife.wordpress.com/2016/05/09/today-we-announce-antechinus-agilis-extinct-in-the-grampians
Today we announce Antechinus agilis extinct in the Grampians. May 9, 2016. Diary Entry. May 9 2031. Today may well be the worst day of my career. The media circus is converging on the Grampians for two major announcements. Today the Grampians National Park is formally going to be renamed the Great Grampians Desert National Park. Some bureaucrat in Melbourne thought adding. To the name would soften the blow and of course the politicians agreed. Idiots! The other announcement today, the one that makes my.

Jackwin 777: Australian Wood Duck
http://jackandelaine.blogspot.com/2015/07/australian-wood-duck.html
Wednesday, 29 July 2015. The Australian Wood Duck. Used to be called the Maned Duck. Yeah yeah. Right. They are always changing names. I discovered last weekend that the Black-winged Stilt is actually the White-headed Stilt. These following images of an accommodating [relatively] pair were taken on the Macalister River at Maffra. The male has a mane! Downside to the species:. Defecating everywhere [especially paddocks - can't be good for bovine or ovine health]. They are a pretty bird. It takes one moment.

Monday, 29 September 2014. When you are walking along very slowly keeping a lookout for all those birds in the treetops, you tend not to pay attention to what is at your feet. Besides, a stick is a stick. I was about 3 metres away when I noticed the stick and did a quick stop. Not often you see a stick as straight as this. Lowland Copperhead Austrelaps superbus. Even though he/she was warming up, there was still enough energy to flatten the neck. ID anyone? Monday, September 29, 2014. Gippsland has two t...

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Saturday, 18 January 2014. Barwon River above Buckley Falls. It was good to get out of the house this morning after a torrid week, four days above 41 °C. It was back to the low twenties and members of the Geelong Field Nats found the walk along the Barwon River very pleasant. View west from Newtown Lookout, smoke haze from the Grampian fire over the Barrabool Hills. Near the bridge on Geelong Ring Road where it crosses the Barwon. Links to this post.
