Adventures in Mali!

Wednesday, August 26, 2009. The Toughest Job You'll Ever Love. Before I left for Mali, I heard Peace Corps described as “the toughest job you’ll ever love”. Boy is that true. From language barriers to cultural differences to being a replacement volunteer to staring starvation in the face to feeling completely inept and useless to loneliness and homesickness to anemia, giardia and heat rash, the last two years have been far from easy. But. The sky – extraordinary sunrises, sunsets and starry nights. Walki...

Adventures in Mali!: O-BAM-A, O-BAM-A!

http://annainmali.blogspot.com/2009/01/o-bam-o-bam.html

Sunday, January 25, 2009. It’s 10 am in Sikasso, and I’m still cold! For the past three weeks, I’ve been wearing long skirts at site, sleeping under a wool blanket and heating my bath water. Every evening at my homologue’s house, we gather around a small bonfire. I have a clock in my house that measures temperature - it usually reads in the low 70’s, which isn’t that cold, but is certainly not hot. I love it! Love you, Amimatta. January 25, 2009 at 7:32 PM. Adventures in Mali!: May 2008

http://annainmali.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 19, 2008. Hot season is here – yet with it come mangoes! Of course I can’t write a new blog entry without bringing up the fetishes! First off, right before April training, the “ciwaara” fetish came out, which was basically four men dancing in the middle of a circle wearing what looked to me like huge bushes. They let me take pics as long as I gave a little money to the old men so that they could buy kola nuts. This has been my life in Mali for the last month! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Adventures in Mali!: March 2009

http://annainmali.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 27, 2009. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times…. I have yet to get past page one of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, which has been gathering dust on my bookshelf for the past six months. The first sentence rings true though in Kourouma right now. It is the best of times because…mangoes are here! Also, GO HEELS - sweet 16 woo! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I've posted pictures on a snapfish account. If you want to view them, email me and I'll send you the link!

Adventures in Mali!: June 2008

http://annainmali.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 17, 2008. Other than that horrible experience, things in Mali have been just fine the last month. I’ve been busy the last week and a half painting a big World Map on one of the walls at the school. Two other volunteers came to help a bit, and I let the school kids’ paint in the countries and oceans. It’s been a fun project and everyone’s been really enthusiastic about it. This past week Solika and I have been going to other villages in the commune for vaccinations/baby weighings, and I&#821...

Saturday, October 4, 2008. I ended up going home before it was all over, and it was 2:45 am! I have a best friend in village! For those of you who are still reading my blog, I hope things are going well and remember that I really appreciate comments! Alla k'aw keneya soro (May God give you health),. Laura in Mali: October 2007

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 26, 2007. Babies and children and sheep, oh my! I’m back in Sikasso after a little over a week in village. Salimata, Soumaila and I have continued to go to the other villages in the commune doing vaccinations and baby weighings. It’s been really nice to have some scheduled time where I feel like I’m actually doing something useful. Plus I’m getting to see some other villages and ride my bike a lot. I’ve definitely been useful as another set of hands. With our current system, I haven&#8217...

Laura in Mali: Return to Ameriki

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2009/09/return-to-ameriki.html

Monday, September 14, 2009. The finished well by my house. Two of my host family's granddaughters, carrying the twin grandsons (born in November 2008). They take care of the twins while the mother works. Feeding porridge to one of the twins. My host father's daughter, Fatoumata, and her son Arouna and baby daughter. I did "jabi" for the occasion of leaving village. The crowd at my party. This old woman was always really annoying and asked me for stuff, but she was fun at the party. Balaphones at the party.

Laura in Mali: July 2007

http://lbainmali.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 22, 2007. N be Mali la. I don't know yet what language I'll be learning. I'm exicted for tomorrow, because we have a French placement test and our first interview with the APCD (I think that's Associate Peace Corps Director), which will have to do with site placement, and thus also which language we need to learn. I even went running this evening and it was just fine. It rained this afternoon which really cooled it down. Tonight I had my first experience with. Wednesday, July 18, 2007. I gue...

Peace Corps Mali had the best uniforms! Those are Dogon hats. Stephanie and Amy cheer on the team. Siete semanas en Kolkata… for the moment. Tomba de la madre teresa. Abril 22, 2011. I DO NOTHING HE DOES IT ALL. Els pajaritos es van enviar tots junts a japo, ara per sort ja no fem mes! Corre un rumor que el govern...

Journaling a 27 month adventure in the Kyrgyz Republic. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. How Kyrgyzstan has made me a rude American. March 27, 2015. 10 things I picked up in country that my American mother would be ashamed of. My personal hygiene has gone down the drain. I bathe (maybe) once a week and when I do it is from a bucket that contains as many rusty flakes of degrading bucket as it does hot water. I frequently use febreeze and wet wipes as a hygiene substitute. Bodily functio...

Anna in la Belle France

Anna in la Belle France. Living in France (and teaching English too). Saturday, June 5, 2010. The last week in Orléans was busy and stressful, so the blog was put on hold.  Since being home, I've had time to finish my post about Ireland and the South of France as well as posting my thoughts on leaving and my joy of the French seasons.  There are 3 new posts below and I'm currently working on one about being "on the other side". 160; Will I feel the same? 160; It’s a big question.  . anna in med school | diving in head first and writing what i can

Diving in head first and writing what i can. Anna in med school. I’m a doctor. I graduated from medical school this past Saturday–surreal, to say the very least :). To be honest, I was a bit of a nervous wreck during the ceremony…not that I would trip or, for some reason, not receive my diploma, but that my poor kids wouldn’t make it through the 2 -hour ceremony. Ugh, they were troopers, as were John and my brother Stephan who were tasked with entertaining them. 8220;Dr. Anna Jesus.” And we...Almost exac...
