The Chronicles

Thursday, April 06, 2006. Found, at last. Over a month ago, I lost my binoculars. I had left them in my backpack, I was sure. I scoured my room, but a dorm room offers few hiding places. After I had emptied my three drawers and poured my closet out onto my dorm-room floor, I turned to the rest of campus. I sent out emails and visited the lost and found nearly every time I passed it. I prefer birding alone, when I have the privacy to stroke flowers and meet birds in solitude. Springtime birds, here I come!

The Chronicles: In the land of storybooks

http://birdingchronicles.blogspot.com/2006/01/in-land-of-storybooks.html

Tuesday, January 03, 2006. In the land of storybooks. Today was a children’s book sort of day. Clear skies, sunshine, warm breezes, happy boys with bare feet - Elizabeth Enright and Carol Ryrie Brink probably created some of their stories on days like this. I had lunch outside, while my little brothers ran around in the greenbelt. After lunch, I joined them, stretching out on the trampoline with. Chickadees sang, and a bird I didn’t recognize. Then I climbed into the tree fort with my book in one hand, m...

The Chronicles: ... and spontaneity

Sunday, January 01, 2006. On the way out to Spur, Bolt had been reminiscing about a hiking trip he had once taken to Guadalupe. We had no good reason to return home that day, so when we arrived in Abilene, we turned West instead of East. We drove to the base of the Guadalupe Mountains just as the sun was rising. As we pulled into the campground, Bolt’s headlights shone on a pair of Canyon Towhees. Life birds before the sun had even fully risen! This was going to be a great day. The wind grew stronger as ...

The Chronicles: The unknown

http://birdingchronicles.blogspot.com/2005/10/unknown.html

Thursday, October 13, 2005. Today I was walking to class, and I thought I saw a bird on the ground. I walked slowly up to it and began to doubt. Perhaps it was really a leaf. But no, it was indeed a bird, a Brown Thrasher. I wonder what he was doing. I wonder why. Posted by Courtney @ 7:29 PM. View my complete profile. Escapades with junior birders.

The Chronicles: February 2006

http://birdingchronicles.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 18, 2006. Fjord’s interest in birding has continued to develop, leading to the establishment of a regular birding schedule. The plan is to go every Thursday morning before our 9:30 classes. When I canceled this week’s trip, we agreed to go instead on Saturday. A cold front blew in, though, and I was reluctant to venture out into the freezing rain and 30 degree temperatures. And I justified it by telling myself that we could go Sunday morning when the thermometer had risen ten degrees.

For Elect Eyes Only: November 2005

http://puritanbirder.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html

For Elect Eyes Only. I'm a Calvinist birder. Here is my story. Perseverance of the Sibley -. Tuesday, November 29, 2005. Somewhere in northern Louisiana, there is a tree. It has no leaves. A constant cheeping, screeching, and twittering comes from it. Close by, there is a bush. It is covered with leaves on all but one side- the side I am on. From it always comes a song. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory. And wingless, I watch. Posted by Lynn at 7:51 AM. To return...

For Elect Eyes Only. I'm a Calvinist birder. Here is my story. Perseverance of the Sibley -. Saturday, August 27, 2005. South to the Border II. Tuesday morning and off to South Padre Island, long enough after spring break to feel safe enough. Other than a flock of Eastern Kingbirds, nothing appeared distinctly enough at 70 mph to exclaim over. A distant white guy with black wingtips could have been a gull or a pelican, for all I knew. I’m not too good with recognizing how they fly. After some post-study ...

That takes my voice away and gives me a cough, I was privileged to go out around the Riverbend Retreat lake in the rain. Note the first time I was there, a vulture patrolled the trees on the bottom side of the circle of life. Posted by Lynn at 5:43 PM. Sunday, January 22, 2006. My sincere apologies for the delay.

In all my years, I have never experienced avian defecation on my person. I cannot say the same for my automobile, but I figure they don't keep track of which cars people drive. They have better things to do. In a tone of heightened emotion, she sputtered, "Have. Ever been pooped on by a non-human creature? Posted by Lynn at 9:29 AM.

For Elect Eyes Only. I'm a Calvinist birder. Here is my story. Perseverance of the Sibley -. Saturday, December 31, 2005. I went skiing for the first time yesterday. Mt Spokane was beautiful, with softly but swiftly falling snow and snow-laden trees bending over the trails. It was beautiful from the car. Outside, it was what I can only describe as "dang cold.". There were probably twenty of them, and their calls were similar to other chickadees but different enough for even my ears to distinguish. Pe...

For Elect Eyes Only. I'm a Calvinist birder. Here is my story. Perseverance of the Sibley -. Tuesday, June 28, 2005. On the Street Where You Live. Leaving a little early for work, I stopped in the middle of the road twenty feet from my driveway yesterday. There was a curvaceous bird of prey above, uncharacteristically soaring toward rather than away from me. These are usually Turkey Vultures leaving, but this time it was a Mississippi Kite approaching! Posted by Lynn at 7:40 AM. Sunday, June 26, 2005.

On the recommendation of my guru of ornithology, Sir Argon Darnay, I have begun a weblog of my birding experience. His schedule requiring him to leave the country tomorrow for the duration of over two months, he desired that the undertaking be quite urgently and assiduously pursued. I would not disappoint him. For Elect Eyes Only. I'm a Calvinist birder. Here is my story. Perseverance of the Sibley -. Friday, July 29, 2005. Watching out the window while answering a Sprint telephone survey, I spotted a little wren shape. Only an hour ago, a downpour rinsed the dust on my car to make mud on the ground for me to splatter on the wheels. I discovered two nights ago that more than one Bewick's Wren think our parking lot an enjoyable place to hop around in the evening. What kind of paper? She knows me well. Back to m...

For Elect Eyes Only. I'm a Calvinist birder. Here is my story. Perseverance of the Sibley -. Monday, October 31, 2005. Walking through the waterside park, with its tall trees, we flushed Blue Jays, a couple of flickers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers and meadowlarks. Their twittering was peaceful and our wandering bodies weary; when we reached the bank we all sat in the grass to gaze out upon the water. We spent some time there; but probably none of us could tell you how long. Presen...

Birding Charlevoix

Birding from my home location in Charlevoix, MI. Tuesday, October 18, 2016. Despite my best resolutions to do otherwise, it has been too long since I've updated this. I have a pretty good excuse as I've been very busy helping to get the Sunset Coast Birding Trail up and running. I'll be discussing it more in the future. For now, I'd like to return to Alaska - both in this blog and in reality, but a real return trip will have to wait. There are also dunes made up of coarse, black sand from the volcanic ro...
