Chertsey: April 2015

http://chertsey130.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Boats, beer, and paraffin. Oh, and tea. Thursday, 9 April 2015. Rocky made a new friend on Friday. Here he is with Spot. They began by having a marvellous time chasing about the yard. Ricky has quickly learnt not to try to run at top speed under boats, so Spot had the advantage there. Wednesday, 8 April 2015. No pics of a pet at the Port. Tuesday, 7 April 2015. Painting, tidying and starting to scrub. We didn't need to go to the pub at all last weekend, cooking quite happily on the Origo. I was dubio...

Chertsey: August 2014

http://chertsey130.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Boats, beer, and paraffin. Oh, and tea. Wednesday, 13 August 2014. As everyone else started packing away and leaving, we were left feeling very. Special on our marvellous mooring. Tuesday, 12 August 2014. After the disturbances of Saturday night, Ian and Tina weren't keen to hang around, so we said goodbye to them as they took Holland. Back up the canal - we of course were heading in the other direction, down the river. A beautiful boat (well, for a josher.) and excellent travelling companions. With the ...

Chertsey: ... and keeping Rocky on board

http://chertsey130.blogspot.com/2015/03/and-keeping-rocky-on-board.html

Boats, beer, and paraffin. Oh, and tea. Friday, 27 March 2015. And keeping Rocky on board. He might have qualms about descending four and a half feet, but with a bit of a run up he'd have no trouble in the opposite direction, so the first task of the weekend was to Rocky-proof the hold, creating a safe enclosed space, particularly so that he can't escape at night. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Angry people in local newspapers. Sticky mess all over my house anger. How did this get round the prop?

http://chertsey130.blogspot.com/2015/04/painting-tidying-and-starting-to-scrub.html

Boats, beer, and paraffin. Oh, and tea. Tuesday, 7 April 2015. Painting, tidying and starting to scrub. I think I must have forgotten some of the things we did at the weekend, because once again we left with a feeling of achievement. Most noticeably, Jim primed and painted the new Rocky-proof partition - all in gloss red oxide to match the inside of the hull. Rocky observed operations and only got himself a few extra white hairs from the primer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The only way is down.

Narrow Boat Chalice: Thames is magnificent, but very busy today

http://chalicecruises.blogspot.com/2011/04/posted-by-alancath-last-night-we.html

Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Friday, 22 April 2011. Thames is magnificent, but very busy today. Last night we finally got down to thinking about our options for the rest of the journey. Although we were sure we had probably caught up enough of the time lost over Alan's eye problems, there remained the thorny question about one particular stretch of the Thames which although only just over 5 miles long always places heavy constraints on the journey into London. Of course this stretch of t...

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO: May 2015

http://sickleandflamingo.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Narrow Boats SICKLE and FLAMINGO. Thursday, 28 May 2015. A Trip to Stoke Bruerne. Boat Flamingo - posted by Cath). We've been working on Flamingo on and off for weeks now, since we sold Chalice (except for various medical appointments and our trip to Rickmansworth with Sickle). We are making progress, but there is a lot to do, so any improvements seem small compared to the whole of what will eventually be needed. Stoke Bruerne, near the tunnel to avoid a long trip in reverse! We spent a fairly relaxed mo...

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: Back to two boats in single locks - and the duvet from hell.

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Saturday, 6 September 2014. Back to two boats in single locks - and the duvet from hell. Boat Sickle and Chalice - posted by Alan / Cath). Very retrospective post for Tuesday 26th August. Waiting at Atherstone after we had caught up slower boats. We were well positioned to start off up Atherstone locks in the morning, but, as we were just getting going, a number of other boats wishing to do the same turned up. Hartshill depot - full of character but sadly neglected looking.

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: Another Chapter In Our Boating Story

http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014/12/another-chapter-in-our-boating-story.html

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Monday, 22 December 2014. Another Chapter In Our Boating Story. Well it has finally happened , after lots of false starts, and one persistently less than serious "seller". We can now announce that our "new" (old) boat is "Large Northwich" "Flamingo", originally built for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company as their "Letchworth" by the same builder as "Sickle", (W J Yarwood and Sons), and in the same year, (1936). It can be found here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE: April 2014

http://sickleandchalice.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Narrow boats SICKLE and CHALICE. Saturday, 26 April 2014. Odin comes home from hospital. The short story is that Odin has been very ill with sepsis caused by peritonitis. He required three abdominal operations in 12 days. For the last two weeks he has been at the Queen Mother Animal Hospital which is attached to the Royal Veterinary College at North Mimms. He came home on Saturday 26th April. The long story is below. and it is a long story. He wasn’t, he had to be carried downstairs. So, we too...In the ...

Narrow Boat Chalice: May 2010

Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Monday, 31 May 2010. Rickmansworth to Kensal Green. Posted by Cath, using Alan's account). A grey and overcast day after yesterday. The alarm went off as usual at 7 am, and again, I had difficulty in surfacing from sleep. I've had a difficult couple of terms at work, and I'm falling asleep all over the place. Alan got up and took Charlie up the towpath for his first walk of the day, while I levered myself from bed and got dressed. Alan had wound the paddles a...

Narrow Boat Chalice: November 2009

http://chalicecruises.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Boating with our canal narrow boat "Chalice". Sunday, 15 November 2009. Once again apologies for my failure to post our boating 'adventures'. I've spent the last couple of weeks frantically trying to cope with the lack of one third of our small department. We have now recruited another teacher who knows one end of a computer from another, and I hope very much, that life will start to return to some degree of normality. Berries by a lock in Berkhamsted. Chalice at Dudswell, only a few locks from 'home'.

Occasional tedious ramblings from a feminist, atheist, autistic academic and historic narrow boater who likes cats, beer, tea, and solitude, and is strangely fascinated by the cinema organ. Tuesday, 13 March 2018. I know how to enjoy myself. I went for a nice little walk on Saturday. I visited one of my old stamping grounds, where I'd not been back for over ten years. I walked six and a quarter wet and muddy miles and passed 21 locks, then got the train back to where I started. Saturday, 10 March 2018.

Chertsey Beer & Pie Challenge 2014

Chertsey Beer and Pie Challenge. Any idiot can drink a beer. It takes a legend to make one. Sunday, 5 October 2014. Get brewing and start planning your pie. The Chertsey Beer and Pie Challenge is back (with a rather unique way to commemorate the Great War centenary). One hundred years ago, the world descended into an unprecedented cataclysm. The lamps went out all over Europe and barely a village or household was untouched by tragedy. On a slightly less profound but equally enduring note, British beer.
